Although we meet together as a community on Sunday mornings, its important to remember that church is not an event that we attend weekly. To have true community and a thriving church we must continue to worship and experience community throughout the week. Feel free to comment on different discussion topics, share what the Lord has done in/for you, and check back often to see what we're focusing on together....

Pastor Jim Cecil: Created to Become Like Christ

What are the characteristics of a follower of Jesus?

Here are some ideas...Compassionate, accepting of others, selfless, loving, sacrificial, helpful, patient, real and honest, willing to submit to God...

DISCIPLESHIP

Romans 8:29

For God knew his people in advance, and he chose them to become like his Son, so that his Son would be the firstborn, with many brothers and sisters.

Ephesians 4:15

God wants us to grow up, to know the whole truth and tell it in love--like Christ in everything. We take our lead from Christ, who is the source of everything we do.

My purpose in life is to become like Christ.

THREE UNEXPECTED TOOLS

1. God uses TROUBLE to teach us to TRUST HIM.

Romans 5:3-4
Mark 14:32-34
Mark 14:36

Keep a SPIRITUAL JOURNAL. (Numbers 33:2)

Remember THE REWARD. (2 Corinthians 4:17)

2. God uses TEMPTATION to teach us to OBEY.

Matthew 4:1
Matthew 4:10

Keep focused on WHAT IS GOOD AND RIGHT.

Phillipians 4:8a

Get a FRIEND.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

3. God uses TRESPASSES to teach us to FORGIVE.

Matthew 27:39-44
Luke 23:34

Remember God has FORGIVEN ME.

Ephesians 4:32

Remember God IS IN CONTROL.

Genesis 50:20
Romans 8:17
Phillipians 2:5

What do you think? Has God used any of these "unexpected tools" to shape you? Do you have an experience that would illustrate one of these well that you would like to share?

Tonight's main point is: Remember that God is in control.

Do you believe that? All the time?

What do I need to begin doing right now to be a better disciple of Jesus Christ?
